In simple meaning, asana is a body posture and general term used for sitting in meditation posture but if you understand the yoga philosophy you would realize the true power of asanas, for those who are still learning about asanas should know that they should learn these basic things with great conviction because this is exactly the thing that will form the basis of your practice and what you do and what you become as a yogi will be driven by how to approach it.
When you perform asanas as a beginner you might not put much attention to it but the experienced yogis know that it is very important to perform these asanas correctly as it will help with flexibility and muscle strength and failure to perform asanas correctly will have its consequences. Our teacher at Marianne Wells YTT always used to put great emphasis on learning the asanas and perfecting it all the time, though yoga is something that you learn and you always remain a student but this is the base of your practice.
Performing the asanas correctly will result in a better daily life, what we do on a daily basis is influenced by our mobility and strength and asanas help lubricate the spine and alignment of it which in return ensures that you have greater endurance and flexibility, your muscles are stronger and you don’t have to worry about losing mobility which naturally starts to decline after a certain age and you have to make conscious choices which fight against depleting mobility.
